A teaser and full trailer have been added to the official website for Joji Matsuoka‘s upcoming film Snow Prince. Thankfully, Shochiku released a subtitled version via their English-language site around the same time. The film was produced under the working title “Little Country”, but that was changed around the time the cast was announced back in May. The script was written by Kundo Koyama, who also wrote the screenplay for Yojiro Takita‘s Academy Award-winning Departures.
Synopsis: Set in the early Showa era, Snow Prince tells the story of a 10-year-old boy named Sota (Shintaro Morimoto) who lives with in a poor, snowy village with his grandfather and his dog Chibi. He’s been friends with a girl from an affluent family named Sayo (Marino Kuwajima) since they were little, but Sayo’s father (Teruyuki Kagawa) doesn’t approve and tries to keep them apart. Sota dreams of becoming a professional painter one day, and with the lessons learned from his grandfather he manages to stay optimistic while enduring mounting hardships.
“Snow Prince” will be premiering at the Hawaii International Film Festival on Tuesday, October 20th with another screening on Saturday, October 24th. Distributor Shochiku will be releasing it publicly in Japan on December 12, 2009.

Seems to be either angry dad or weaselly crazy guy roles for him. He’s very convincing in both of those though.
Tokyo Sonata, now this…what about Teruyuki Kagawa says “Bad Dad”? Well, “Difficult Dad” anyway.
Ooh, is that Tadanobu Asano possibly portraying a painter? Probably inappropriate to say regarding a family film, but that would be hot.
