The official website for Takashi Yamazaki’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Space Battleship Yamato has been updated with a full trailer.
The film stars Takuya Kimura of the boy band SMAP as Susumu Kodai and Meisa Kuroki as Yuki Mori. In this version, formerly male crew members Aihara and Dr. Sado are played by actresses Maiko and Reiko Takashima.
Plot: In year 2194, and a mysterious enemy called the Gamilions begin an invasion of Earth, destroying the planet’s military defenses with ease and wiping out most of humanity in the process.
Five years later, Earth has become a polluted wasteland and most survivors have been driven underground. Even former ace pilot Susumu Kodai has left the military. One day while exploring the wasteland, he witnesses a communications capsule from a planet 148,000 light years away fall to the ground. The capsule is from Iscandar, a planet which has technology capable of clearing radiation from Earth that will otherwise wipe out all the remaining survivors in less than one year.
The Defense Force of Earth equips the Space Battleship Yamato with a “wave-motion engine” created from schematics found in the capsule. With Earth’s fate in his hands, Kodai re-joins the Force and the Yamato begins the dangerous journey to Iscandar.
“Space Battleship Yamato” will be released by Toho on December 1, 2010.
Update (10/3): Replaced trailer with the English-subtitled version from the English section of the official website.
