Over four years have passed since Toshiaki Toyoda released his last film, “Hanging Garden”. A lot has happened since then—most notably, the fallout from a drug bust for possession of banned stimulants—but Toyoda is finally poised to make his comeback as a filmmaker with The Blood of Rebirth.
The film is based on the famous kabuki legend of Oguri Hangan, who was said to have traveled to the holy land of Kumano to be resurrected after nearly dying from poison. 44-year-old musician Tatsuya Nakamura plays Oguri. The girl lugging him around is Mayuu Kusakari, real-life daughter of actor Masao Kusakari (who also has a role).
“The Blood of Rebirth” will premiere at Tokyo Filmex this November and distributor Phantom Film will release it publicly in Japan sometime in December.
