Married couple Yuji and Yoshie receive an invitation to the closing of Orion theater in Kyoto. They recall how they first met there as children in the late 1950s. The film then flashes back to a time when a man named Tomekichi Senba (Ryo Kase), a young cinema enthusiast, is trying to become an apprentice of Orion’s manager Matsuzo (Ryudo Uzaki) and his wife Toyo (Rie Miyazawa). When Matsuzo dies, Toyo and Tomekichi decide to work together to keep his dream alive. They’re able to keep Orion running in the face of a declining film industry and also amongst mean-spirited gossip about their relationship. In fact, even the viewers are never explicitly told whether the two are lovers or just platonic friends that care about each other.
