A teaser has been added to the official website for Masaaki Taniguchi‘s new live-action film version of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. And if it seems as though this one sneaked up on us, it kind of has; distributor stylejam has kept this project remarkably low-key for the better part of a year for whatever reason.

The film stars Riisa Naka  (the voice of Makoto in the 2006 animated film) as Akari, the 18-year-old daughter of the protagonist of the original novel, Kazuko Yoshiyama (played by Narumi Yasuda). When Kazuko is injured in a car accident and falls into a coma, Akari leaps back in time to the 70s to seek out her mother’s first love, Kazuo Fukamachi. Instead, she meets a college student named Ryota (Akiyoshi Nakao) who helps her with her search.

The film will be released first at Cinequanon’s Human Trust Cinema Shibuya and Yurakucho 1-chome in March, 2010.

The opening of the trailer(With the chemicals and school chem lab) looks like it’s from the original live action “girl who leapt through time film” so it
Looks like its more a sequel to the original live action Girl who leapt through time, than a sequel to the Anime.
But since the Anime was sort of a sequel to that original film too I guess it could be a remake of the Anime

Yeah, definitely not a sequel to the anime. The anime was a sequel itself, so this is just an alternate sequel with a different main character. They make it confusing by never changing the title.
