Here’s the trailer for Umi no Ue no Kimi wa, Itsumo Egao (something like “You’re on the sea, always smiling”), an unabashed feel-good teen drama filmed, in part, to benefit environmental protection along the Kanagawa coast and youth programs in Fujisawa and Chigasaki. It’s slated for release in Japan on May 9th.
The story revolves around a 17-year old high school student and basketball player named Migiwa (Mitsuki Tanimura) who has a secret crush on a boy named Riku (Dori Sakurada). One day Riku asks her if she surfs, and without thinking she lies and says she does. She quickly begins practicing on her own to cover for her lie, but when she gets swept up in a wave, the board drifts away from her and gets lost. Panicked, she hops on her bike and pedals around the coastal area of Shonan looking for anywhere it may have washed up. Like a typical road movie, she meets various people in her travels and experiences some personal growth.
