Here’s the trailer for Tetsuya Mariko’s feature length debut, Yellow Kid. The film was produced as part of the post-graduate program at Tokyo University of the Arts and is being distributed in a collaboration between the school and Euro Space. The 28-year-old director first made his mark as a Hosei University student when he won back-to-back “Off Theatre” grand prizes at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival in ‘04 and ‘05.

The documentary-styled film stars Kaname Endo (Crows Zero) as an aspiring boxer named Tamura whose parents died when he was young, leaving him to be raised by his grandmother who now suffers from dementia. One day he meets up with a high school friend named Hattori (Ryo Iwase) who’s based the main character of his manga “Yellow Kid” on Tamura. Seeing the manga version of himself has a profound impact on Tamura, causing his usually calm demeanor to become far more intense. When Hattori notices this, he decides to use his drawings to influence Tamura’s actions for his own purposes.

“Yellow Kid” got some late show screenings at Shibuya Euro Space from June 27-July 3, 2009 and will be released by Euro Space again beginning on January 30, 2010.
